Coastal Inundation Forecasting Initiative

The Coastal Inundation Forecasting Initiative (CIFI) is a multi-hazard warning system that promotes an integrated approach in the enhancement and delivery of early warnings, no matter what the causes for coastal inundations are, in line with the concept of impact-based forecasting and the UN Sendai Framework for Disaster Risk Reduction (DRR).

This Initiative is built on the experiences and development of a series of IOC, IOCARIBE and UN and International partners. In particular, the WMO led Coastal Inundation Forecasting Demonstration Project – Caribbean CIFDP-C (Hispaniola Island – Dominican Republic and Haiti)  that was  completed in November 2018.

The development and implementation of an operational forecast and warning system for coastal inundation for the Hispaniola Island has been a complex and often challenging endeavour.

A strong interaction and synergies have been achieved with the ongoing projects performed by the IOCARIBE-GOOS, the IOC Intergovernmental Coordination Group for the Tsunami and other Coastal Hazards Warning System for the Caribbean and Adjacent Regions (CARIBE EWS).

The Coastal Inundation Forecasting Initiative (CIFI) is development and implementation is led by the CARIBE-EWS.
