A productive ocean supporting sustainable food supply and a sustainable ocean economy
The ocean’s bounty yields both food and energy. A sustainably harvested and productive ocean ensures the provision of global invaluable food supply. Rebuilding wild fish stocks, protecting biodiversity and comprehensive fishery management will safeguard the ocean-based food supply. The ocean is also a source of livelihood. Knowledge and tools are essential for rebuilding wild fish stocks and implementing comprehensive, sustainable fishery management to achieve productive fish stocks while protecting the biodiversity and ecosystems those stocks rely on to thrive and the livelihoods many depend upon.
Other stakeholders worldwide depend on the ocean as well. The private and public sectors share the goal of developing a sustainable blue economy but have widely different priorities. The energy industry in particular needs extensive knowledge and support, including safe and sustainable thresholds for economic operations in the ocean, to achieve innovation, technological development – and a sustainably productive ocean.
