Summary
The Weather Field School for Fishermen is an innovative program designed to provide fishermen and partner officials with a deep understanding of weather patterns and climate dynamics. By empowering fishermen with this knowledge and extending skills using marine weather information, this training course intends to enhance the ability to anticipate and adapt to extreme weather events and associated impacts. It is designed to promote sustainable fishing practices and aquaculture implementation to secure the future of marine resources. With a curriculum comprising four comprehensive sessions, this course stands as a critical step towards safeguarding the livelihood of both fishermen' and coastal communities, simultaneously promoting the resilience of marine ecosystems.
Aim:
Increase the understanding of weather and climate information and enhance fishermen’s skills in its use.
Learning outcomes:
- Interpret climate information and extreme weather climate warnings
- Implement the weather-climate information as a guidance in their daily work
- Deliver their knowledge to others and build a community of practice for safer cruising and fishing activities
Course content:
Session 1. Marine Weather and Climate for Fisheries Sector.
Session 2. Marine Meteorology Information for Fisheries Sector.
Session 3. Understanding Marine Information for Fishery Activities.
Course Format: ONLINE
- Lectures: synchronous (webinar using Zoom meeting application)-synchronous session will be conducted 2 times/ week tentatively on Tuesday and Wednesday at 02.00 - 04.30 UTC

Target audience and prerequisites:
Fisheries Extension workers and related service officials in the district/city government and academics who are working as partners for fishermen and coastal communities, with the following professional background:

- Professionals working with agencies in the field of meteorology and climatology, maritime, aquaculture, fisheries and hydrology, and other related disciplines.
- Professionals working or that will work as partners for fishermen and coastal communities
- Hold a Bachelor's degree in relevant disciplines and have at least two years of working experience in relevant fields.
- Having experience in ocean literacy-related fields
- Having sufficient skills to communicate with the coastal community
