IOCARIBE Adopts 14 Strategic Recommendations to Strengthen Ocean Governance in the Caribbean and Adjacent Regions

At the Eighteenth Intergovernmental Session of IOCARIBE (SC-IOCARIBE-XVIII), held in Brasília from April 23–25, 2025, Member States endorsed strategic recommendations across key thematic areas: ocean literacy, blue carbon, marine spatial planning, harmful algal blooms, ocean data, acidification, capacity development, and more.

This collective effort reinforces the region’s commitment to the UN Decade of Ocean Science for Sustainable Development (2021–2030) and highlights the value of coordinated science-based action.

📣 In the words of IOCARIBE Chair, Dr. Marck Oduber:

“Colleagues and friends, we have the frameworks, and vision. Now we must deliver — together. Let us co-create science that empowers us. Let us co-design policies that heal. Let us co-invest in futures where every child in the Caribbean and adjacent regions grows up ocean-literate, every coastal community has access to forecasts and data, and every decision-maker values the ocean as a living partner in sustainable development.”
