1. Background

UNESCO-IOC Tsunami Ready Recognition Programme (TRRP)

The UNESCO-IOC Tsunami Ready Recognition Programme (TRRP) is an initiative of the Intergovernmental Oceanographic Commission (IOC) of UNESCO, designed to strengthen tsunami preparedness and resilience in coastal communities worldwide. The program is a critical component of global efforts to mitigate the impacts of tsunamis and save lives.

2. Purpose and Goals

The TRRP aims to:

  • Enhance preparedness for tsunamis through community planning and education.
  • Reduce the risk of loss of life and damage to property and livelihoods.
  • Foster a culture of tsunami awareness and resilience in vulnerable coastal areas.

This program aligns with the United Nations Decade of Ocean Science for Sustainable Development (2021-2030) and the Sendai Framework for Disaster Risk Reduction, promoting sustainable and resilient coastal communities.

  • introduce the TR guide on the Tsunami Ready Implementation Workflow for Recognition of communities by IOC
  • describe the UNESCO-IOC Tsunami Ready Indicators and their requirements
  • review the supporting TR guidelines, awareness and educational materials and other tools
  • share good examples and experiences in the implementation of TRRP from NEAM and other regions
