UNESCO and its Intergovernmental Oceanographic Commission invite you to a special screening of the award winning documentary, Collision (2023), at UNESCO Headquarters, followed by a discussion with the film's Director & Producer, Philip Hamilton, scientific experts and representatives of the maritime industry.

A worldwide increase in maritime traffic over the last two decades is threatening the ocean, its inhabitants and the planet. Collision (2023) lifts the veil on the severely under-reported issue of fatal strikes on whales by ships and other vessels.

Today, ship strikes have become one of the main causes of death for large cetaceans and the leading cause of some populations disappearing. With the help of leading scientists, NGO's and worldwide authorities, the film portrays the devastating impacts of maritime traffic on ocean life and suggests solutions to mitigate the problems. The film has already influenced one of the world's largest shipping companies to reroute its vessels therefore reducing the risk of collision with whales.
