Oceanology International Americas | Ocean Decade Data Enterprise - what role and benefits for the industry?

16

Summary

During the Oceanology International Americas conference (14-16 February 2023 / San Diego, USA), the Ocean Decade will lead a side event on 16 February (12:20 - 13:50) to discuss pathways to unlocking data for the benefit of ocean science.

About the side event:
Digitizing, accessing, managing and using ocean related data, information and knowledge will be cornerstones of the achievement of the Ocean Decade vision of the ocean we want by 2030. However, the availability of and access to ocean data and information are currently insufficient to develop a comprehensive understanding of the ocean and inform sustainable ocean management. Industry has a key role to play in achievement of the Decade’s goals in relation to ocean data, and can also benefit from involvement in this global initiative that aims to address key challenges related to the development of a sustainable ocean economy.

This session will explore the role of the private sector in the Ocean Decade in relation to ocean data. Via a high-level panel discussion, it will provide an overview of the Ocean Decade vision and mission, describe the Decade’s data and information strategy, and discuss opportunities and benefits for private sector participation. The Ocean Decade Corporate Data Group will be introduced and members will present diverse perspectives on the challenges, opportunities and benefits of increasing the accessibility of industry-held ocean data.
