GOOD-OARS Summer School

04 - 11

Summary

The GOOD-OARS Summer School will return! From 4 to 11 November 2025 it will offer a new cohort of early career ocean scientists, graduates, and doctoral researchers the opportunity to learn the latest science of ocean acidification and deoxygenation from leading experts in these fields.

The school aims to teach the multidisciplinary skills and knowledge needed to understand the ocean and atmospheric processes involved in ocean deoxygenation and acidification, including the theory of physical and biogeochemical process, interactions with the biosphere, and system feedbacks, fieldwork and laboratory practicals, modelling, and stakeholder engagement.

The school will be hosted by the Centre for Marine and Coastal Studies (CEMACS) in Penang National Park, Malaysia. This pristine site provides a refuge for hundreds of marine and terrestrial species.

Applications will be open to graduate and PhD researchers, and early career ocean professionals. Funding solutions are limited, and applicants are advised to try as much as possible to arrange financing from their own institutions and networks.

The application portal will open in September 2024. Sign up to the GO2NE mailing list or the GOA-ON mailing list to stay informed and be notified when the application portal opens. Contact the GO2NE secretariat, go2ne-secretariat@unesco.org, for more information.

The Global Ocean Oxygen Decade (GOOD) and the Ocean Acidification Research for Sustainability (OARS) programmes are endorsed under the United Nations Decade of Ocean Science for Sustainable Development (2021-2030) and led by the Global Ocean Oxygen Network (GO2NE) and the Global Ocean Acidification Observing Network (GOA-ON) of IOC-UNESCO.
