Strengthening coastal hazards preparedness and resilience in UNESCO Biosphere Reserves is a challenge that requires a multi-sectoral, multi-hazard approach rooted in sound science, local knowledge and community participation, coordination and cooperation across different levels and diverse stakeholders. Learn about the experience of the TSU-MAB Joint Initiative that was implemented in the Savegre Biosphere Reserve, Costa Rica.

The Initiative supported the consolidation and strengthening of the Municipal Emergency Committee of Quepos and provided the community with technical tools and updated information on coastal hazards such as evacuation maps and emergency response plans and protocols. In addition, it involved environmental experts that provided useful nature-based solutions to mitigate coastal hazard risk in the Biosphere Reserve.

Based on the TSU/MAB Joint Initiative, UNESCO is developing Guidelines for coastal hazard preparedness in UNESCO Biosphere Reserves.
