Summary

The Working Group on Harmful Algae in the Caribbean (ANCA), operating under the IOCARIBE Harmful Algal Bloom (HAB) Programme, will convene for its 10th meeting. This session aims to evaluate the progress made in regional initiatives, address emerging challenges in marine ecosystem health, and establish the strategic priorities for the upcoming biennium. By fostering collaboration among member countries, ANCA continues to consolidate its role as the primary regional platform for research, monitoring, and effective management of HABs in the Caribbean.

Since its inception in 1996, initiated by Cuban researchers, ANCA has been instrumental in advancing the understanding of toxic microalgae events. Through the continued support of IOCARIBE and the IOC HAB Programme, the group has successfully facilitated the training of over 60 regional experts, significantly enhancing the Caribbean’s capacity to mitigate the impacts of HABs on marine life and human safety.

El Grupo de Trabajo de Algas Nocivas del Caribe (ANCA), parte del Programa de Florecimientos de Algas Nocivas (HAB) de IOCARIBE, se reunirá en su 10ª sesión. El encuentro tiene como objetivo evaluar el progreso de las iniciativas regionales, abordar los nuevos desafíos para la salud de los ecosistemas marinos y definir las prioridades estratégicas para el próximo bienio. Al fomentar la colaboración entre los países miembros, ANCA continúa consolidando su rol como plataforma regional clave para la investigación, el monitoreo y la gestión eficiente de los HABs en el Caribe.

Desde su creación en 1996, por iniciativa de investigadores cubanos, ANCA ha sido fundamental en el avance del conocimiento sobre los eventos de microalgas tóxicas. Con el respaldo continuo de IOCARIBE y el Programa HAB de la COI, el grupo ha facilitado la formación de más de 60 expertos regionales, fortaleciendo significativamente la capacidad del Caribe para mitigar los impactos de los HABs en la vida marina y la seguridad humana.
