International Workshop on Solutions to Control HABs in Marine and Estuarine Waters
21 - 22
Summary
The International Workshop on Solutions to Control HABs in Marine and Estuarine Waters will be held on October 21 and 22, 2023 in conjunction with the PICES Annual meeting in Seattle, Washington, USA. It is being sponsored by the IOC-SCOR Global Harmful Algal Blooms (GlobalHAB) Programme and the North Pacific Marine Science Organization (PICES).
The workshop will specifically focus on HAB control methods that affect the target HAB organisms themselves, either killing them or removing cells and/or toxins from the water. There will also be a strong focus on methods that have been field tested. However, some advanced lab methods may be considered if strong evidence is provided that they will be suitable for use in the field. Lessons will be drawn from experiences in freshwater HAB control. Discussions will include effectiveness for use in marine systems, cost, scalability, regulatory hurdles and approaches for communicating with the public and stakeholders. The workshop will not focus on bloom prevention or HAB mitigation efforts.
This workshop will be held in person with no opportunity for remote or absentee participation. Presentations are by invitation only and an associated poster session is planned. The venue is the Westin Seattle Hotel. Visit the PICES-2023 Annual Meeting website for more on registration steps, costs, financial assistance and to submit an abstract. A pre-registration step must be completed and final registration and payment for the full meeting is required to attend the workshop. Early bird registration is $250 Canadian dollars (CAD) until June 15, then registration increases to $350 CAD. Students and invited speakers are offered a reduced registration cost of $50 CAD. Abstracts can be submitted until June 15 with acceptance notifications coming about a month later.
