Resumen

From Stock Take to Scale on Target G: Accelerating the Knowledge and Practice of MHEWS for Risk-Informed Resilience 

Building on the progress and achievements of the first two conferences, the Third Multi-Hazard Early Warning Conference (MHEWC-III) is planned to take place 23-24 May 2022 at Bali Nusa Dua Convention Center, Bali, Indonesia. MHEWC-III provides a unique opportunity to review key accomplishments, and share skills, experience, and expertise within an active MHEWS network. Attendees will exchange and explore how the community can scale efforts in MHEWS implementation to better deliver on the aspirations of MHEWS the Sendai Framework, the Paris Agreement, and Sustainable Development Goals.  Moreover, practical training opportunities to support and enhance understanding and utilization of key advances in science will be organized. Training is envisioned to include modules on artificial intelligence, new data sources/information, communication standards/technologies, and monitoring and evaluation to track the effectiveness of MHEWS.   

Aims of the MHEWC-III 

The Conference will:

  • ‘Take stock’ of progress in the implementation of Target G of the Sendai Framework.
  • Report on the latest trends in MHEWS design, results, and impact and share knowledge, lessons learned, and emerging examples of good practices as captured in the joint UN Words Into Action on MHEWS publication  
  • Identify gaps and challenges in practice, policy and science to be addressed in future work   
  • Promote coordination and collaboration among MHEWS stakeholders and identify synergies with other initiatives and partnerships on early warning and action  

IOC UNESCO Tsunami Unit is co-organizing a side event session with WMO  on 'Are our Early Warning Systems Effective?', and also supporting other sessions on Governance & Inclusive Early Warnings; Preparedness (24 May), Early Action, Anticipatory Action; Humanitarian angle and Innovation: The Next Generation of Forecasting and Warning Systems. 

The session outcome will be of direct input to the seventh Global Platform for Disaster Risk Reduction, 25-28 May, Bali, Indonesia.
