Regional Tsunami Inundation and Evacuation Mapping Training (NEAM Region)

Regional Tsunami Inundation and Evacuation Mapping Training (NEAM Region)

06 - 07

Résumé

1. Introduction
This Concept Note outlines the framework for a specialized training on local-level Tsunami Inundation and Evacuation Mapping in the NEAM region. The training aims to equip participants with the knowledge and skills needed to develop accurate inundation and clear and effective evacuation maps to enhance community safety and disaster preparedness.

2. Objectives
The main objectives of the training are:
• To provide comprehensive education on tsunami hazards and their potential impacts
specifically focusing on NEAM region.
• To train participants in the latest techniques and tools for creating detailed tsunami
inundation maps.
• To develop skills necessary for designing effective evacuation maps and plans.
• To foster a collaborative environment for sharing best practices and innovative
solutions.

3. Scope of Training
The training will encompass the following topics:
• Tsunami Hazard Understanding: Overview of tsunami formation, behavior, and
historical events in NEAM region.
• Inundation Mapping: Methodologies for data collection, analysis, modeling
(probabilistic and deterministic), and visualization of inundation zones.
• Evacuation Planning: Principles and practices for designing and creating evacuation
maps, identifying safe zones, and developing communication strategies.
• Community Engagement: Strategies for involving local communities in evacuation
mapping to ensure practical and accepted solutions.
• Technology and Tools: Training on specific software and tools (GIS, modeling tools,
etc.) used in tsunami modeling, inundation and evacuation mapping.

4. Participants
The training is intended for:
• CoastWAVE project partners
• Local and regional government officials responsible for disaster management in NEAM region.
• Emergency response personnel and planners in NEAM region.
• Scientists and technical experts in probabilistic and deterministic tsunami modeling and geographic information systems (GIS).
• Community leaders and representatives from non-governmental organizations (NGOs) in NEAM region.

5. Expected Outcomes
By the end of the training, participants will have:
• Enhanced understanding of tsunami hazards and their impacts especially in NEAM
region.
• Practical skills in creating deterministic tsunami modeling, tsunami inundation maps
using the latest tools and techniques.
• Developed preliminary local level evacuation plans tailored to local contexts.
• Improved capacity for collaboration and information sharing among stakeholders.
• An action plan for applying learned skills in their respective areas.
