The United Nations Conference on Sustainable Development (UNCSD), also known as RIO+20, will be held from 20-22 June 2012 in Rio de Janeiro. The conference aims to build on the 1992 Earth Summit and the 2002 World Summit of Sustainable Development. Among many agenda items, Rio+20 aims to tackle the issues of protecting our oceans from over fishing, the destruction of marine ecosystems, and the adverse effects of climate change. As a regional subsidiary body of the Intergovernmental Ocean Commission, IOCARIBE and its member states will play an important role in the conference. You can read more about IOC involvement in Rio+20 here.
Following the 2002 Johannesburg World Summit on Sustainable Development (WSSD), the United Nations General Assembly launched an initiative to create a regular process for the global reporting and assessments of the state of the marine environment, including socio-economic aspects. The initiative is intended to enhance the scientific basis for marine related policy making at national, regional and global scales.
